The “salt road”, to Praid and Sovata

About this tour

We start our day, making a short trip to Sovata, to visit the Ursu Lake (The Bear Lake) which has a unique status, holding three records. A first world record is that Ursu is the largest and warmest heliothermal lake in the world, the second record being that it is the only saltwater lake in the world surrounded by a mountain of salt with rich vegetation, due to the volcanic soil that set in time, and the third world record is that the Ursu Lake is the only one in the world whose date of birth is known with an accuracy of one minute. More exactly on 27th of May, 1875, at 11 o’clock.

You’ll have some free time in the city center of Sovata for shopping and after that we will go to Praid Saline. Situated at 10 km away from Sovata resort, in the Harghita District, Praid Saline is one of the biggest salt mines from the country and even Europe. Its exploitation has been standing for income source for the inhabitants of the area for hundreds of years. Inside the salt mine you will be pleasantly surprised to find locations you would not have thought of, such as a church, a performance hall, a library, a cafe, souvenir stands, a 3D cinema or a pharmacy.
